This is a popular start-off point for visitors to the Skellig Islands.
The vibrant color’s of Portmagee’s village front as seen from across the Bay is very picturesque, and remember this is where the Star Wars crew and actors stayed while filming for the current movies of that name.
STARGAZING: Portmagee is in the Buffer Zone of the Kerry Reserve Space as the orangey glow of the many street lights prevent any quality Stargazing for which the Kerry Reserve Space was awarded. Portmagee is only a 15 minute drive away from the nearest Dark-Sky Core Zone area of The Glen. For more about Core and Buffer Zones download the Kerry Reserve Space tourist PDF map here.

VISITING THE SKELLIGS

Portmagee and Ballinskelligs are the two departure points for visiting the Skellig islands.

Thanks to the intricately chiseled coast around the South West of Ireland, Magee’s trade in contraband spirits, textiles and tea and tobacco was extremely hard to police and therefore very profitable. He married Bridget Morgell, the widow of a rich Dingle merchant and also the daughter of the then representative for Dingle, Thomas Crosbie. There is some suspicion that Magee's death in a Lisbon monastery was due to some exile imposed by the powerful MP. However, his wife and sons continued the family business of smuggling.
